The trash talk between UFC heavyweights Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis has been heating up ahead of a potential matchup in the coming months.
It is starting to look like the highly anticipated bout, which has been speculated on for nearly a year at this point, could finally be coming to fruition.
It is clear that both fighters want to fight each other, and Lewis made that point evident when he talked about a potential matchup with Blaydes after defeating Alexsei Oleinik at UFC Vegas 6 last weekend.
“That’d be perfect to fight Curtis next,” Lewis said. “All he’s going to do is try to grab me and hold me and try to win a decision. He’s not going to try to finish me. If he do try to finish me, that’s fine, but I do believe I can take Curtis down and punish him on the ground.”
Blaydes, who is currently ranked third in the heavyweight division, thinks Lewis, who is ranked fourth, is the perfect opponent for him to prove he is more than deserving of a title shot. Nevertheless, he could not help but poke fun at his rivals appearance after complimenting his impressive performance against Oleinik.
“Derek showed some pretty good submission defense,” Blaydes told MMA News. “I don’t know if it was his technique or just the fact that he has a really big head. But I was impressed by his defensive jiu-jitsu and he got the knockout. Happy for him because that means we’re one step closer to fighting.”
Do you think that Lewis’ big head actually gives him a leg up on the competition? Let us know in the comment section below!
