On August 7, Lightweight Michael Chandler defeated Benson Henderson at Bellator 243 and propelled himself into free agency.
After this bout, his contract with Bellator ended. Now, the question on everyone’s mind is: where will Chandler sign next?
The biggest opportunity would most likely be the UFC, as Chandler could jump in and fight top contenders right away.
However, Chandler’s history with Bellator is extensive. He has been involved with Bellator since 2010 and is one of the staples of the promotion. This shows that Bellator may want to shell out a very competitive offer to Chandler in order to keep him in their reigns.
Scott Coker, Bellator’s president, said that he is unsure about where Chandler will sign, but he will do what he can to keep their relationship positive.
“If we sign him, I think we have some great fights ahead for him…” Coker told MMA Junkie. “Free agency works both ways, but we love Michael Chandler. He’s been an ambassador for the company, and we’ll see what happens.”
Will this long-standing relationship hold its ground, or will a Championship or UFC fight jump into the mix and shell out the big bucks for Chandler?
