On Saturday, UFC Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated interim champion Justin Gaejthe via triangle choke at UFC 254.
After securing his victory over Gaethje on Saturday, Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from MMA, crediting it to losing his father, Abdulmanap, in July. His father attended every fight as a coach, mentor, cornerman, and all-around idol.
Now the question is—who will fight for the soon vacated Lightweight title? Rumors are floating around about the Conor McGregor-Dustin Poirier matchup being for the title. Others say that Gaethje deserves another shot. Just to add to the mix, newly signed UFC Lightweight Michael Chandler was named the alternate for the original title fight. And of course, we can’t forget about the legend of the sport, Tony Ferguson. There are so many options to consider, and a matchup between any of these would be an entertaining and intense fight.
