Evander Holyfield teams up with Vladimir Klitschko to train for a possible comeback fight against Holyfield Tyson.
Evander Holyfield is considered by many to be one of the most accomplished boxers ever. He is the only boxer in history to win the undisputed championship in both cruiserweight and heavyweight. He is the only boxer to win the world heavyweight championship four times. His legacy is undeniable; whether or not Holyfield, age 57, can maintain those expectations remains to be seen as he makes plans to return to the ring.
In a recent video on Holyfield’s social media, he can be seen training with another boxing legend, Vladimir Klitschko. Klitschko is a former heavyweight champion and a multiple time boxing record holder, including the impressive title of the longest cumulative heavyweight title reign of all time.
Even with the hard work Holyfield is putting in with Klitschko, Holyfield is willing to acknowledge his limits given his age and substantial gap in his training.
When asked about the fight itself, he said it would be an exhibition match, “Look, we are going three rounds. It’s not 10 or 15. Maybe there’ll be headgear. My intention is not to knock someone out.”
Holyfield has said in the past that there are only three fighters he would come out of retirement to face one more time.
Holyfield told The Times, “It’s better you do it with people who have been around like you. I don’t want to go and fight someone trying to make a name for themselves. People want to see me and [Riddick] Bowe, of course, Mike Tyson and maybe Lennox [Lewis], that would be good. I’ll spar with anyone.”
Of the three, the most interesting matchup was always between Holyfield and Tyson
Tyson and Holyfield have a unique shared history and a shared rivalry dating back to their fight in 1997 billed as “The Sound and the Fury”, in which Tyson was disqualified for biting both of Holyfield’s ears, tearing a chunk out of his right ear.
The possibility of a fight between two boxing legends such as Tyson and Fury has created some buzz, both amping at the media and their fans. While most are excited to see two greats throw down once more in what is likely to be the last fight of their careers, others belive that the boxer’s advanced ages and lack of practice may result in a less entertaining fight than hoped. One such skeptic is Frank Warren, Hall of Fame promoter.
“It would be a freak show;” said Warren. “I don’t wanna see a 53-year-old guy fighting a 57-year-old guy. Obviously, it doesn’t take a genius to know they’re well, well, well past any sell-by date as far as fighting’s concerned.”
On the other side of the discussion are fans that are excited by the idea of these two living legends getting into the ring together for the third time. One such fan is none other than the unified heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua. Joshua is expected to fight Tyson Fury in the near future.
Joshua spoke with GQ: “This is what we breathe, this is what we are, and especially someone like ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, that’s all that man knows. So for everyone else, it’s a comeback, but for him, it’s just what he does. He’s a fighter, right? If he’s back in the ring, I would love to see it; I would definitely be one of the viewers, that’s for sure.”
There aren’t any specifics currently, so boxing fans will have to keep their ears to the ground in the meantime.
