Shakur Stevenson’s Rise to Stardom

Former WBO Featherweight Shakur Stevenson has continued his rise to stardom since bursting on the scene in 2017. The undefeated boxer also won a silver medal for the United States while fighting in the bantamweight division at the 2016 Summer Olympics, which only reinforces his already impressive resume.

The 23-year-old, who fights with a southpaw stance, recently vacated the WBO featherweight title to make the jump to the junior lightweight division. Nevertheless, he has consistently impressed regardless of the division he fights in, as he is a true force to be reckoned with in the ring.

Stevenson often overwhelms his opponent with an excellent combination of strength and quick striking ability. It is almost like he turns his opponent into a punching bag, rather than an equal competitor. It is clear that he has been no match for any of his opponents to this point in his career, and he is deserving of an opportunity at some tougher competition.

Stevenson’s first fight amongst the junior lightweight division will take place on December 12, 2020, in a bout against Toka Kahn Clary.  Clary is undeniably the more seasoned of the two men, as the 28-year-old has seen more than double the amount of fights that Stevenson has to this point in his career.

An aspect of Clary’s game that he will surely look to use to his advantage will be his massive wingspan, which should allow him to keep Stevenson at bay. If he is able to do this effectively, that would effectively allow him to control the tempo of the fight.

Stevenson will have to display a stellar defensive performance if he wants to come out on top of the clash. The fight could quickly turn into a chess match, as both fighters could vie for control.

The bout offers Stevenson with the perfect opportunity to show that he deserves stiffer competition.
