Julio Cesar Martinez to defend flyweight title against McWilliams Arroyo
Julio Cesar Martinez vs McWilliams Arroyo
Julio Cesar Martinez (17-1-0) will defend his WBC flyweight title against McWilliams Arroyo (20-4-0) on Saturday, February 27 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, and will be available to watch on DAZN.
It was a match-up previously announced to take place back in August but had to be rescheduled due to Martinez coming down with a throat infection. Since then, Martinez has had a successful title defense against Moises Calleros (33-10-1) in October before postponing another fight with Francisco Rodriguez in December. There shouldn’t be any more delays as Martinez goes on to defend his flyweight title for the third time since winning the belt back in 2019.
Arroyo is coming off three consecutive wins in 2019. In order to beat Martinez, currently ranked #2 overall flyweight boxer in the world by The Ring, Arroyo will have to tap into the momentum he had built up before scheduling delays caused him to miss over a year’s time in the ring.
Arroyo is no stranger to building momentum of his own. In addition to pulling off three successful title defenses, he hasn’t lost a single fight. This upcoming match with Arroyo was mandated by the WBC. This will be an excellent display of what Martinez is capable of, as he continues to make his presence known on the world stage.
On his upcoming fight with Arroyo Martinez said, “I am so happy to be back in the ring again and I promise you a war with Arroyo in Miami. With the unification fights ahead of me, it is important to take care of my mandatory challengers and I expect a tough fight with Arroyo. I believe that 2021 will see me unify the division and become undisputed and I can’t wait to put a smile back on boxing fans' faces.”
Arroyo seems relieved to finally have a decisive date for the fight saying “Nothing is certain until the bell rings . I can't be very serious all the time. I hope he and the people on his team, as well as mine, stay healthy for this fight. It is the second time they give us a date and it will finally take place.
He added, “It will be another classic with Mexico going against Puerto Rico, because of our styles. It will be a good fight that the public will enjoy.”
