The violent conflict between the Republic of Artsakh Nagorno-Karabakh and the Republic of Azerbaijan began on September 27, 2020. Many Armenian athletes have volunteered to defend their fatherland Artsakh against the attacking Azerbaijani forces.
The classical masculine archetype has always depicted men as fighters. Courageous fighters have historically been the main characters in countless legends, poems, and songs.
Two things unite countless Armenian athletes. The first is that nearly all Armenian athletes have in common is that most have found their niche in combative sports such as Boxing, MMA, and Wrestling. Secondly, many have found it necessary to fight for their homeland on the battlefield.
The fact that Armenian athletes have left their career behind to fight for what they believe in is quite shocking to sports fans around the world. Their selflessness allows them to stand out when compared to others in the industry, and they have shown that they are not only warriors in the fighting world but also in real life, as well.
Professional MMA fighter Albert Ghazaryan professional is most well-known for defeating Azerbaijani athlete Rustam Murtazov on May 8, 2016, at the OFS Mixed Martial Arts Tournament. After the bout, he dedicated his victory to the heroes of the April War of Artsakh in 2016. Little did he know, he would soon join those whom he dedicated his victory to on the battlefield in the most recent conflict between the two enemies.
What is a war if not a human tragedy that has been an unfortunate part of history since the beginning of time? Unfortunately, there are always casualties when it comes to war and there is a good chance that some athletes may lose their lives over everything that they are fighting for. Nevertheless, the path of a warrior tends to be one of tragedy or perseverance, so it is not all that surprising that these fighters put their lives on the line for what they believe in.

While war is often seen as a necessary part of life, peace is always the preferable outcome to even the most victorious war. People risk losing everything they own, even their own lives. However, the 2020 conflict has shown just how brave Armenian professional athletes are. Many have put their career on hold to do what they see is right, and that is as honorable as honorable gets. They have shown that they are not only warriors in the ring, but they are warriors in real life as well.
