The Rise of Edgar Berlanga - Puerto Rican Mike Tyson
Edgar Berlanga is one of the brightest rising stars in the boxing world, and he looks to be just getting started. The 23-year-old has even drawn comparisons to a young Mike Tyson due to his ability to gain first-round knockouts against his opponents. The undefeated superstar will look to keep his momentum going as he advances his career in the industry.
Berlanga, who fights with an orthodox stance, has made serious noise in the super middleweight division since debuting in 2016. While his physical characteristics may not make him stand out in a crowd, he packs as much of a punch as any young fighter today.
While his undefeated streak looks impressive on its surface, it is far more impressive considering the fact that he has knocked all of his opponents out in less than three minutes. As Berlanga will surely face stiffer competition as he grows in his career, he has shown a well-rounded skill set that should allow him to find success regardless of the quality of his opponent.
Berlanga has been so impressive early in his career that he earned a compliment from one of the greatest fighters to ever step into the ring. Mike Tyson mentioned that Berlanga looked “sensational” in his most recent victory against Lanell Bellows. However, Tyson did mention that Berlanga will have to show that he can go the distance when the time comes that he has to.
While Berlanga mentioned that he was honored to receive the compliment from Iron Mike, he seems to be more focused on those who doubt him.
“Nobody’s really getting to see it [my boxing skills] because all they see are the knockouts,” said Berlanga. “A lot of people are calling me the Puerto Rican Mike Tyson, just a one-punch power hitter. They don’t even know I have boxing skills.”
While Berlanga does not have another fight scheduled at the moment, he will surely look to make the jump to a higher quality opponent soon. With the heightened stakes, the pressure will be greater as well, but Berlanga looks to be up to the test.
