The Galaxy, Charlo, and Sullivan brothers have been some of the best known twins in the boxing world for the past decade. However, a new set of Australian twins have been on a tear for the past six years and are still looking to make a name for themselves.
Andrew and Jason Moloney have made it their mission to leave their mark on the boxing game since day one. At the start of their careers, the brothers created a buzz as amateurs at the boxing Commonwealth games. Jason Moloney participated in the Commonwealth boxing games in 2010 in the Men’s Flyweight division. Throughout his amateur career, he managed to secure four national titles with a 13-5 record.
Andrew Moloney had more success in his earlier career than his brother. Andrew competed in the 2009 World Amateur Boxing Championships, 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships, and 2014 Commonwealth Games. The Mitcham native was able to capture 7 state, 7 national titles and a Commonwealth Gold medal throughout his amateur career.
Due to the early success in the brother’s careers, they managed to go professional in 2014. Jason began to solidify his position by winning his first four bouts by knockout and winning the WBA Oceania Bantamweight title in his fifth bout. While his brother was building his fighter resume, Andrew managed to kickstart his professional career with a 10-0, 6 KO record. Both fighters spent their first 10 bouts vacating and securing the WBA Oceania Bantamweight title with their dominant performances.
Although both were predominantly orthodox bantamweight fighters, Andrew transitioned to the super-flyweight division by securing the interim OPBF, and WBA Oceania super flyweight titles by defeating Raymond Tabugon by TKO. With the help of the seasoned trainer Angelo Hyde, the twins continued to improve, growing their scores to 15-0.
As the spotlight got brighter, the competition got tougher. After starting his professional career with a whooping 17-0 record. Jason was handed his first loss by a split decision to Emmanuel Rodriguez in 2018. Following that loss, Jason won his next four fights before recently losing to the current unified bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue. Andrew progressed in his professional career winning his first 20 bouts before recently losing to super flyweight powerhouse James Franco by unanimous decision.
Despite both brothers' recent experiences with defeat, the Australian natives are still on a first-class trip to stardom. Jason (21-2, 18 KO) is currently ranked 6th nationally in the bantamweight division while (Andrew 21-1, 14 KO) is ranked 9th nationally in the super flyweight division. Be on the lookout for the Moloney brothers; they may very well be the future of boxing.
